A magnetic resonance imaging scan, commonly called a MRI, is an imaging procedure used to create detailed images of the body’s organs and tissues. MRIs are performed in medical facilities across the globe, as the scan uses no radiation and is non-invasive, painless, quick and accurate! Now that you know the perks of this procedure, you may be wondering what a MRI scan is used for?

Utilizing the power of magnets, radio frequencies and a computer, a MRI produces a clear picture of the patient’s internal structures, which allows the physician to accurately detect damaged, unhealthy tissue. A MRI is most effective in the evaluation of:

• Brain Disorders
• Tumor Detection
• Knee and Shoulder Injuries
• Heart Problems
• Eye, Face and Neck Abnormalities
• Spine, Liver and Abdominal Diseases
• Blood Flow, Vessel and Musculoskeletal Disorders

If your medical provider advises you to receive a MRI, there is often little to no preparation required before the scan. You may be asked to change into a gown before you enter the scanner, and you will be asked to remove any metal jewelry or accessories beforehand as these will interfere with the machine. Generally, you are free to eat and drink normally, with the mere exception of caffeinated beverages, which should be limited on the day of your appointment. You should refrain from wearing eye shadow or mascara to your examination.

Once you have been checked in and are ready for the exam, you will be asked to lie down on the scanning table, typically on your back. Earplugs or headphones are often provided to block out the machine’s loud tapping noise. The technician will ensure that you are comfortable and properly positioned, and then the table will move into the scanner. A coil may be placed around the part of your body that is being scanned, which acts as an antenna and helps the machine produce a better quality image.

Your MRI scan may take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. During the scan, it is imperative to stay as still as possible. Any kind of movement can disrupt the machine, which will cause the image to be unclear and blurred. If at any time during your scan you feel uncomfortable, you can speak to the technician via intercom. Once your MRI is complete, the technician will review the scan to ensure the images are clear. He or she will then clear you to leave, and they will supply your doctor with the results of the scan.
