While the winter season may be cold and gloomy, your outlook on life doesn’t have to be. With these simple tips, you can beat the winter blues this year and feel happier and healthier than ever!

Be active. When the temperature drops below freezing, your motivation can easily drop too causing you to not want to leave the comfort of your couch. However, remaining active and exercising daily is important to not only your health, but also your happiness. It has been proven that exercise boosts your mood. Sign up for a gym membership with your friend, and make a commitment to go to the gym together regularly. Exercising with a friend makes it easier to stick to, as well as more enjoyable. On days that the winter weather strikes and you cannot get to the gym, try yoga in your living room or do some simple exercises at home with weights.

Eat healthy. The holidays are the prime time for sugary sweets and fatty foods, making it hard to stick to a healthy diet. However, do your best to avoid the temptation of unhealthy treats, as they do nothing for your body or mind. Studies have shown that the consumption of foods that are high in sugar and carbs can alter your blood sugar levels, causing you to feel cranky or extremely moody. Avoid the emotional distress and stick to foods that are healthy and nutritious, such as whole grains and vegetables. When you eat foods rich in fiber, protein and vitamins, your body and mind will thank you.

Stay social. Do not hibernate in your home this winter. As humans, we desire and need socialization. In fact, studies have shown that socializing boosts your mood. It doesn’t matter how you do it just as long as you do. Grab lunch with a co-worker or meet a friend for a cup of coffee at your local café. Start a book club, or attend a Zumba class. There is a multitude of ways to enjoy others’ company even during the cold months. Remember, you are not a bear. You are not meant to stay bed-ridden during the winter season!

Enjoy the little things that winter brings. While winter’s harsh weather can leave you feeling cold and cranky, it is important to try to enjoy the fun festivities of the season. Why dread the holidays like a Scrooge when you can revel in its warmth and cheer? Whether you are ice skating with friends or decorating the Christmas tree with your loved ones, indulge in the special moments that only come around once a year.

The team at Maryville Imaging wishes you the happiest, healthiest holiday season.
